Study on the crystal morphology and melting behavior of isothermally crystallized composites of short carbon fiber and poly(trimethylene terephthalate)

Mingtao RUN, Hongzan SONG, Yanping HAO

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 3,   Pages 255-264 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0008-9

Abstract: The spherulites of the short carbon fiber(SCF)/poly (trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) composites formed in limited space at designed temperatures, and their melting behaviors were studied by the polarized optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The results suggest that SCF content, isothermal crystallization temperatures, and the film thicknesses influence the crystal morphology of the composites. The dimension of the spherulites is decreased with increasing SCF content, but whether banded or nonbanded spherulites will form in the composites is not dependent on SCF content. However, the crystal morphology of the composites depends strongly on the temperature. When the isothermal crystallization temperatures increase from 180°C to 230°C, the crystal morphology of SCF/PTT composites continuously changes in the following order: nonbanded → banded → nonbanded spherulites. Discontinuous circle lines form in the film when the film thickness increases from 30 to 60 μm. Basing on the SEM observation, it is found that these circle lines are cracks formed due to the constriction difference of the different parts of the spherulites. These cracks are formed when the film is cooled from the isothermal crystallization temperature to the room temperature at a slow cooling rate; while they will disappear gradually at different temperatures in the heating process. The crack will appear/disappear first around the center of the spherulite when the film was cooled/heated. The nontwisted or slightly twisted lamellas will reorganize to form highly twisted lamellas inducing apparent banded texture of the spherulites.

Distributed flexible reconfigurable condition monitoring and diagnosis technology

HU You-min, YANG Shu-zi, DU Run-sheng

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2006, Volume 1, Issue 3,   Pages 276-281 doi: 10.1007/s11465-006-0025-z

Abstract: As manufacturing becomes increasingly decentralized, flexible and reconfigurable, more research needs to be done on monitoring and diagnosis technology that accommodate these new trends. The distributed condition monitoring and diagnosis technology based on the flexible and reconfigurable concept is studied here. A condition monitoring diagnosis model based on the distributed flexible and reconfigurable idea is proposed in this paper. The component makeup and functions of this model are discussed in detail. The model can fulfill in most instances the manufacturing system requirements for changing the configuration of the monitoring diagnosis system according to different manufacturing system configurations. This model also realizes the flexibility and reconfigurability of the monitoring diagnosis system in some degree. The model has already spawned a successful prototype for monitoring a chemical plant in accomplishing monitoring and control of the production process and equipment. Finally, some future research work is pointed out.

Rational Understanding about Renaissance Path of China's Road and Bridge Engineering

Mao-run Feng,Zheng-song Zhao

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2014, Volume 1, Issue 1,   Pages 42-51 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2014013

Abstract: At the turn of this century, China began the largest road and bridge development in the world, which has virtuously interacted with the social and economic development and has elevated the engineering technology to world-class level. Surveying the development of world transportation, and comparing the road and bridge construction efforts of Europe, U.S.A, Japan and China, general experiences of success can be derived as follows: It is greatly beneficial to give priority to transportation for economic development; it takes national strategy and social action to build up a transportation network; demand and innovation are the driving forces to upgrade road and bridge technology; management innovation and quality assurance can greatly improve development caliber. While rationally acknowledging China's transportation infrastructure achievements, we should reflect on issues with Chinese characteristics that have affected quality and efficiency, expose all construction practices that violate scientific law, overall management defects in road and bridge construction and maintenance, and search for new ways to strengthen social management and the creation of a healthy soft environment.

Fast implementation of kernel simplex volume analysis based on modified Cholesky factorization for endmember extraction

Jing LI,Xiao-run LI,Li-jiao WANG,Liao-ying ZHAO

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2016, Volume 17, Issue 3,   Pages 250-257 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1500244

Abstract: Endmember extraction is a key step in the hyperspectral image analysis process. The kernel new simplex growing algorithm (KNSGA), recently developed as a nonlinear alternative to the simplex growing algorithm (SGA), has proven a promising endmember extraction technique. However, KNSGA still suffers from two issues limiting its application. First, its random initialization leads to inconsistency in final results; second, excessive computation is caused by the iterations of a simplex volume calculation. To solve the first issue, the spatial pixel purity index (SPPI) method is used in this study to extract the first endmember, eliminating the initialization dependence. A novel approach tackles the second issue by initially using a modified Cholesky factorization to decompose the volume matrix into triangular matrices, in order to avoid directly computing the determinant tautologically in the simplex volume formula. Theoretical analysis and experiments on both simulated and real spectral data demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces computational complexity, and runs faster than the original algorithm.

Treatment of severe diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the lower limb by combination of superficial femoral artery ligation and supergenual thigh amputation

Yin XIA, Dan SHANG, Qin LI, Xiaoqin RUN, Chenxi OUYANG, Yiqing LI, Bi JIN

Frontiers of Medicine 2009, Volume 3, Issue 2,   Pages 240-244 doi: 10.1007/s11684-009-0031-8

Abstract: Severe diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the lower limb is rarely seen among young people and sometimes can be a fatal challenge for operation. We reported a case of diffuse cavernous hemangioma involving both skin and muscles of the left lower limb and perineal region in an adolescent patient. The patient who had previously undergone a local hemangioma resection of the foot ultimately ended in superficial femoral artery ligation and supergenual thigh amputation of the left upper leg because of uncontrollable massive bleeding of anastomotic stoma.

Fabrication of high-capacity cation-exchangers for protein adsorption: Comparison of grafting-from and grafting-to approaches

Ming Zhao, Run Liu, Jian Luo, Yan Sun, Qinghong Shi

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2019, Volume 13, Issue 1,   Pages 120-132 doi: 10.1007/s11705-018-1730-y

Abstract: In this work, we have synthesized two polymer-grafted cation exchangers: one via the grafting-from approach, in which sulfopropyl methacrylate (SPM) is grafted through atom transfer radical polymerization onto Sepharose FF (the thus resulting exchanger is referred as Sep- -SPM), and another via the grafting-to approach, in which the polymer of SPM is directly coupled onto Sepharose FF (the thus resulting exchanger is called as Sep- SPM). Protein adsorption on these two cation exchangers have been also investigated. At the same ligand density, Sep- -SPM has a larger accessible pore radius and a smaller depth of polymer layer than Sep- SPM, due to the controllable introduction of polymer chains with the regular distribution of the ligand. Therefore, high-capacity adsorption of lysozyme and -globulin could be achieved simultaneously in Sep- -SPM with an ionic capacity (IC) of 308 mmol·L . However, Sep- SPM has an irregular chain distribution and different architecture of polymer layer, which lead to more serious repulsive interaction to proteins, and thus Sep- SPM has a lower adsorption capacity for -globulin than Sep- -SPM with the similar IC. Moreover, the results from protein uptake experiments indicate that the facilitated transport of adsorbed -globulin occurs only in Sep- SPM and depends on the architecture of polymer layers. Our research provides a clear clue for the development of high-performance protein chromatography.
